Internal Family Systems

The Internal Family Systems Model (IFS) is a holistic model of the human mind. It suggests we are all made up of multiple sub-personalities (called parts in everyday language) that form an integrated personality system. When this inner system is balanced and harmonious, we aren’t usually aware of the different parts. However, when the system is misaligned or out of balance (e.g. a part of me wants this and a part of me want that) we experience inner and often distressing conflict. This model has also given rise to an evidence-based and transformative model of psychotherapy* that creates and sustains inner alignment. Important to the IFS Model is the experience of Self - the inner core of a person that has the following characteristics (often referred to at the 8 C’s):

  • Curiosity

  • Confidence

  • Compassion

  • Courage

  • Clarity

  • Creativity

  • Calm

  • Connectedness

IFS helps clients connect to their Self which then acts to bring healing, harmony, balance and connectedness to their inner system.
